Glass Bottles and Sipper Cups |

For some time we have carried questions about the use of plastic baby bottles. We have taken this concern further, researching the clear plastic bottle which in the main is made of polycarbonate plastic (as are some sipper cups, food containers and water bottles.) Research shows that over time and with constant use, Bisphenol A (BPA), the chemical contained in polycarbonate plastic, may leach from the bottle.
We will no longer be feeding babies with any form of plastic bottle and ask that parents respect this. The research is available in the parent library for your perusal. We no longer use sipper cups at Awhina. We came to see that a child who begins to drink from the sipper cup (many of which allow for the child to tip it up without loosing any fluid) will then need to be taught to drink from the usual cup or glass as/when he becomes older. We believe that sipper cups are more for the convenience of the adult and serve no real pedagogical purpose for the child. To provide the child with a cup that (in some cases) when tipped up- side down does not lose its fluid, is simply providing the child with an untruth and what does this mean when the child is offered a normal cup? Straw cups are also not suitable for young children.
